ELLE Project: Leadership Building for Young Women
If a week’s worth of learning, sharing, skill-building, self-discovery, empowerment and new-found friendships is seen as a success, then this year’s edition of the ELLE Project’s leadership-building workshop could easily be called triumphant! From a list of over 100 outstanding applicants from across Canada, 20 young women between the ages of 16 to 25 were selected to partake in the week-long event that took place at Jouvence, in Orford Quebec from October 18th to the 25th.
“I had the opportunity to hear a lot of different ideas and approaches to better organize and facilitate in my community, ex: theatre of the oppressed, networks in other communities, and new ways of broaching subjects. This will help me both as a person and as a “leader”."
Led by a team of facilitators from different backgrounds and leadership styles, the participants engaged in creative and interactive workshops, exploring a myriad of themes from leadership, mentorship, cultural identity, organizational development, to being and making the media, and Podcasting. Our young leaders deal with a number of these issues in everyday life, and were offered a “safer space” where no topics, discussions or queries were off-limits.
This year’s group was dynamic and energized, creating their own emergent spaces in their free time, where they held workshops and discussions on the topics they wanted to share. Live examples of peer-mentorship were put into practice when the young change-makers with more experience supported those who were just beginning to shake things up in their communities. The Girls Action Team is waiting with bated breath to hear all about their future adventures and the impact that they will undoubtedly have on their communities and the world!
