Our Approach

For nearly 15 years, Girls Action has developed a unique approach to empowerment for girls and young women. Based on research and girls’ realities, our programs support girls’ strengths and encourage them to take action for the betterment of their lives, families, and communities.

We focus on empowerment by supporting girls and young women to face their challenges by building on their strengths. Our programs create safe, inclusive spaces where girls engage in popular education workshops, discussions, games, and creative activities.

Evaluations have shown that Girls Action programs help girls build their self-esteem, critical thinking and communication skills, and civic engagement. Workshops are offered in partnership with community organizations, schools, and arts groups.

Girls Action Girls’ Programs:

  • Provide fun activities to get girls thinking about issues that matter to them

  • Connect girls to mentors and role models

  • Encourage girls to raise their voices and to gain confidence

  • Support girls to say what they want changed in their community and to take action

  • Encourage girls to think beyond the bounds of what a girl is supposed to be

We understand that girls’ lives are complex, so our programs address many issues concerning health, self-esteem, and media literacy, as well as the structural barriers related to racism and poverty.

Girls Action Girls’ Programs Are Designed To:

  • Increase girls’ awareness of and ability to address issues of violence and discrimination (including racism, media literacy, sexual health, healthy relationships, poverty, internalized oppression, and relational and systemic forms of violence)
  • Build girls’ self-awareness and self-esteem

  • Foster the development of girls’ critical thinking and communication skills

  • Encourage girls’ awareness of and ability to access resources and mentorship in their community

  • Amplify girls’ experience and skills in community action and leadership
